Lakers defeat Ironheads 7-2

CHISHOLM, Minn. – The Fort Frances Lakers got three points apiece from Byron Katapaytuk and Dane Morin as they defeated the Iron Range Ironheads 7-2 Tuesday in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at the Sports Arena in Chisholm, Minn.

Justin Becton and Christopher Andre would put the home side up 2-0 before the midway mark of the opening period only to see Morin convert on the power play at 11:49 to make it 2-1.

Jaret Leclair would then tie it for the visitors as he converted on a penalty shot attempt beating Iron Range netminder Colton Ishmael at 13:02.

Adam Wensley would then give the Lakers the lead at 17:18 with what would turn out to be his league-leading fourth game-winning goal of the season.

The Lakers’ Jon Stephansson would score shorthanded with the only marker of the middle frame to put his side up 4-2 after 40 minutes.

Fort Frances would then put it away in the final stanza on tallies from Katapaytuk, Ryan Wildman and Wensley once again to round out the night’s scoring.

Tanner Hamilton turned aside 21 of 23 shots he faced to pick up the victory for the Lakers who fired 46 pucks on Ishmael, who suffered the loss.

With the win Fort Frances moves back into first place in the SIJHL standings with an 11-2-1 record. Their 23 points move them just ahead of the 11-2 Wisconsin Wilderness, who holds one game in hand.

Next up on the league schedule sees the Thunder Bay North Stars hosting the Duluth Clydesdales Wednesday at the Fort William Gardens. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
